ATC transcript of VFR flight from SNA to ONT



N132KT: John Wayne Clearance, Piper 132KT, at the east ramp, request VFR advisories to Ontario at 3000, with Alpha.

SNA_DEL: Piper 2KT, John Wayne clearance, after departure fly heading 330, maintain VFR at or below 2400 until advised, departure frequency will be with the tower, squawk 0326. (Note: this is a relatively unique feature of John Wayne's operations, VFR departures work with a radar-enabled tower position prior to being handed off to departure)

N132KT: Piper 2KT, heading 330, below 2400 until advised, departure with the tower, squawk 0326.

SNA_DEL: Piper 2KT, readback correct, expect runway 19L.

With departure instructions in hand, let's head over to Ground to pick up our taxi instructions

N132KT: John Wayne Ground, Piper 132KT, east ramp, taxi with Alpha.

SNA_GND: Piper 2KT, John Wayne Ground, runway 19L, taxi via Alpha, Lima

N132KT: taxiing to rwy 19L, via Alpha, Lima, Piper 2KT

After pulling up to the runway, we make our call with the tower. There is no need to wait for GND to give us the frequency change

SNA_TWR: Piper 2KT, John Wayne Tower, rwy 19L, cleared for takeoff

After takeoff, once we feel it is safe to do so, we make a shallow right turn to hdg 330, as advised.

SNA_TWR: Piper 2KT, contact departure on 127.20, good day

N132KT: over to departure for 2KT, so long

We flip over to 127.20 and make the call with Socal Departure

N132KT: Socal Departure, Piper 132KT climbing through 400

SNA_APP: Piper 2KT, Socal Departure, radar contact

N132KT: 2KT.

After a short while we hear...

SNA_APP: Piper 2KT, resume own navigation and resume appropriate VFR altitudes

N132KT: own nav and alitude for 2KT, thanks

We proceed northeast bound towards Ontario, and pick up the latest weather. After 10 miles or so, we get another freq change...

SNA_APP: Piper 2KT, contact Socal Approach on 135.40

N132KT: Socal on 135.40, good day

We make the freq change then contact socal. As we're fairly close to the destination airport, this is likely to be the approach controller responsible for our destination, ONT, so let's let him know we have the weather. That way, he doesn't have to read it to us. If there's an ATIS code in his ATIS, such as Information Alpha, or Bravo (etc), we'll check in with that.

N132KT: Socal approach, Piper 132KT with Alpha

ONT_APP: Piper 2KT,Socal approach, good afternoon, traffic 12 oclock, 3 miles, left toright, a Cessna 182 climbing out of 1500, report him in sight

N132KT: traffic in sight, 2KT

ONT_APP: Piper 2KT, thank you, plan on entering a left downwind for rwy 26R, contact the tower now on 120.60

N132KT: we'll plan for 26R and over to 120.60, Piper 2KT

We see Ontario International coming up and we visualize a left downwind entry for rwy 26R. We call the tower.

N132KT: Ontario Tower, Piper 132KT 4 miles southwest, inbound for touch and go, staying in the pattern

ONT_TWR: Piper 132KT, Ontario Tower, enter left downwind rwy 26R, traffic abeam the numbers is a Seneca, report him insight, and be advised, aircraft on the frequency with similar callsign, Seneca 432KT

N132KT: Piper 132KT, traffic in sight.

ONT_TWR: Seneca 432KT, cleared to land

ONT_TWR: Piper 132KT, follow the Seneca, on the go make right closed traffic, #2 cleared touch and go

Knowing that the Seneca is making a full stop, we leave enough space to allow him to clear the runway prior to our arrival. After touch down, it's flaps up, carb heat off, full power and we're up and away for right closed traffic. Tower gives us a call on the downwind...

ONT_TWR: Piper 2KT, cleared for the option

N132KT: cleared for the option, this will be a full stop

ONT_TWR: Piper 2KT, roger

After landing, and slowing to taxi speed...

ONT_TWR: exit right when able, contact ground point niner.

N132KT: gound point niner, so long, 2KT

We change to the ground freq

N132KT: Ontario Ground, Piper 132KT cleared to the right, taxi to GA parking

ONT_GND: Piper 2KT, Ontario Ground, give way to the Citation passing right to left then follow him to parking

N132KT: we'll follow the Citation, 2KT
