I-03: First TEC route

TEC - KSNA to KBUR

Recommended aircraft: fast piston (Beech Baron, Piper Seneca) , turboprop (Pilatus PC-12, Piper Meridian, King Air)

"Tower Enroute Control" (TEC) routes provide pre-approved routes and altitudes within adjoining terminal areas.

Pilot will fly KSNA to Burbank (KBUR) using the following TEC route if in a jet or turboprops: SLI, V23, LAX, LAX316R SILEX with a filed altitude of 6000. Piston aircraft should file SLI V23 POPPR SMO125R SMO SMO311R SILEX, at an altitude of 4000.

Winds permitting pilots can be expected to be vectored to the final approach course for ILS RWY 8 approach at Burbank.

The routes above contain both VORs and radials off those VORs. For example, "POPPR SMO125R SMO SMO311R SILEX" means you would fly to POPPR, then the SMO 125 radial inbound to SMO, then the SMO 311 radial to SILEX intersection.

An overview of TEC routes is included in the Related Materials list below. The routes above are the CSTN2 and CSTN1 routes, respectively, and can be found in the ZLA TEC route system (VATSIM) or the FAA preferred route database (PilotEdge), both of which are linked from the TEC overview page.

Even though the correct routes are being provided as part of the text, pilots are encouraged to begin reading and understanding TEC routes now, as a thorough understanding will be helpful for the next rating.

Lastly, pilots are not expected to fly the full approach with the hold entry at SILEX at this stage.  The I-6 is the first rating to introduce and explain the full approach and associated hold entry.
